It is one thing to take Charles Dickens’ celebrated novel about The French Revolution and turn it into a sanctimonious diatribe about 21st-century immigration by substituting French aristocrats fleeing the Terror with refugees escaping Libya, Syria and – judging by the “gor blimey, guv’nor” accents – EastEnders.
